Police Search For Gunman In Wireless Phone Store Shooting

(FOX 11 / CNS) Police searched today for a gunman who killed a wireless phone store owner during an apparent robbery as the victim was closing up his shop in Arleta for the night.

The shooting at 8940 Woodman Ave. near the intersection of Osborne Street happened around 8:40 p.m. Monday, according to Lt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of the Los Angeles Police Department's Mission Station.

Witnesses said a heavy-set Latino man in his 30s with a shaved head, wearing a white shirt, confronted the victim, a 34-year-old man, on the sidewalk in front of the store, he said.

Several people called 911 to report the shooting, and a bystander flagged a passing fire truck to help the man who was shot, Vernon said, adding that firefighters found him down on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

"It appeared he was closing the business when the confrontation that led to his death occurred,'' he said. The man died at the scene. His wife arrived later and told investigators
her husband owned the store since February, Vernon said. "Right now, this appears to be a robbery, but we'll have to look deeper to know for sure. What we can count on, though, is people talk, and we need anyone with information to step up so we can solve this for this man's wife,'' Vernon said.

The gunman was last seen running south on Woodman "for quite a distance,'' Vernon said, adding that several spent cartridges were recovered at the scene.

The man's body -- partially covered by a plastic sheet, a laptop under his right foot -- remained on the sidewalk early this morning outside his store, identified by a sign as the NH Wireless Shop.
