PLANO, Texas -

Country music star Randy Travis remains in critical condition after suffering a stroke undergoing surgery Wednesday night.

Baylor Medical Center posted on its hospital website at about 8:10 p.m. that Travis was in surgery at The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano to relieve pressure on his brain. It lasted for several hours.

Travis was admitted to the hospital Sunday with viral cardiomyopathy, which is caused by a virus. Doctors said he was in good health until three weeks before he was hospitalized, but is now in congestive heart failure.

Earlier, doctors said Travis was making progress.

"His condition has stabilized, and he has shown signs of improvement," Dr. Michael Mack said in a video released by Baylor Health Care System on Wednesday. "On behalf of Mr. Travis' family, friends and associates, we would like to express our extreme gratitude for the overwhelming affection and support that Mr. Travis has received."

Viral cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure. Sources said if Travis survives, he may need a transplant.

The 54-year-old Travis has seen his fair share of trouble with the law in the past year and a half.

He was arrested in February 2012 for public intoxication outside a Sanger church.

Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January this year after he was found naked by the side of his car during a August 2012 incident in Grayson County. Travis received two years' probation for the DWI.

In another incident, Travis got into a fight in the parking of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano in August 2012. A woman got into an argument with her estranged husband over a child custody dispute and when the argument escalated, Travis got into a physical altercation with the estranged husband.

Travis has won multiple Grammy Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards and County Music Association Awards during his decades-long career.]

He most recently won a Grammy Award for a collaboration with Carrie Underwood.
