Police ID East Point police officer found fatally shot

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities have identified the East Point police officer who was found dead from an apparent shooting at her home in Fulton County.

Cpl. Crystal A. Parker, 34, was found dead in her home Sunday evening.

Parker was not only a six-year veteran, but also the 2012 Officer of the Year for her department. The discovery of her death Sunday evening sent tremors through the community that knew her well.

"Right now we're just in a state of shock, we're stunned as an agency, that Cpl. Parker will not  be showing up to work Sunday," said Lt. Cliff Chandler of the East Point Police Department.

Parker worked in the patrol division, often riding bicycle on her shift. Her boss called her an up-and-coming leader.

"Cpl. Parker was one my trusted officers. If I was short a supervisor in the field, I would appoint her as an acting sergeant," said Chandler.

East Point Mayor Earnestine D. Pittman told FOX 5's Chris Shaw that Parker was off-duty. Pittman told FOX 5 that she was found shot to death at her home in the Heritage Park subdivision on Creel Road. Investigators have not confirmed the cause of death.

Authorities aren't sure when Parker died. Officials say she was on vacation for the past week and friends and family said they hadn't seen her in a number of days.

A neighbor of Parker's, Willie Washington Jr., said that last week at a neighborhood watch meeting, residents were told that Parker's home had been broken into three weeks ago.

"We just need to know that it wasn't a home invasion, because it will raise the precautionary level really high if that was the case, as opposed to maybe a domestic issue," said Washington.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office is scheduled to perform an autopsy on her body on Monday.
