Yarnell evacuees allowed to return home; must show proof of residence

YARNELL, Ariz. -

Hundreds of people who were forced out of a small Arizona community because of a deadly wildfire are returning home.

Vehicles lined up along the highway into Yarnell well before the evacuation order was lifted Monday morning. Each had to present identification containing their addresses to gain access to the area.

"We can't wait, we can't wait we've been living in a hotel room," says resident Thomas McMann.

Once in town, residents saw a landscape drastically different than they remembered. Small shops that sell antiques, saddles and groceries are still intact. But more than 100 homes were destroyed, many reduced to ashes.

Yavapai County officials estimate that 30 percent of properties burned were uninsured.

"I am very concerned about those that are vulnerable. I'd like to see their services provided to them," said Kenny Foulk, Yavapai County.

"Today it's been almost matter of fact, they come in and I say, did you lose your house? 'Yes, and we're just trying to figure out what to do first,'" said Flo Henchen, Red Cross.

For those heading in from Wickenburg, a highway sign marking 19 miles to Yarnell is another reminder of what was lost. Nineteen firefighters died battling the blaze. A memorial service for them is planned Tuesday.

A recovery center for residents opened Monday in Yarnell.

The future is here when it comes to vehicles. The auto industry has packed nearly 1,000 automobiles into the Jacob Javits Center on Manhattan's West Side for the 2014 NY Auto Show.   Among the 'must-sees' is a hydrogen-powered vehicle and a prototype with cameras that allow you to see the ground underneath as you drive over it.
