Eden Prairie police confirm a 56-year-old woman was killed by a tree that fell and pinned her as she walked a city path.

Police and fire officials received a call at 5:21 p.m. on Friday to report that a tree had fallen and someone could be heard screaming. When first responders arrived, they found a woman trapped under the tree. She was pronounced dead immediately.

Officials have since identified the victim as 56-year-old Nina MacKay, of Eden Prairie.

Investigators say MacKay was walking a city path around Mitchell Lake and was on the west side when a Basswood tree measuring about 30 inches in diameter fell on her near the intersection of Belfast Cove and George Moran Drive.

Officials are still investigating why the tree, estimated to be about 90 years old, fell. Winds were gusting at about 23 miles mph from the southeast at the time.
