SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

John Lind owns a 1944 M-20 armored utility car. Thursday night, he and two others allegedly took it through a Shelby Township neighborhood and fired compressed air from the machine gun mounted on top.

"There was a lot of children, families in the area celebrating the Fourth of July. They panicked. Our 911 dispatch center got overwhelmed with calls, thought that there was maybe an act of terrorism or something going on," said Shelby Township Police Chief Roland Woelkers.

"I was standing right there. It was shooting at me, and that's nothing. It's not even blanks," said Tom McLean.

Lind is a veteran and the founder and director of Detroit Arsenal for Democracy, a museum specializing in World War II military vehicles.

"He loves the service. He loves the United States," said neighbor Leo Frezza. "Why shouldn't we do things like this? People like to see these things, too, other than in wars."

Officers from Shelby Township, Utica and Sterling Heights all responded. Lind was arrested and has since been released. No charges have yet been filed pending further investigation.

"He would've never even considered to bring it out if he thought somebody would get hurt," said Teri McLean. "People in the neighborhood are used to it. We've seen it. It doesn't scare anybody around here."

"The ones who put on the fireworks, they enjoyed it because they said it added to the show," Tom McLean added.

"He's an honored solider who is retired from our military and did a very stupid act," Woelkers said.
