PEORIA, Ariz. -

It's a love story 70 years in the making.  A valley couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in Peoria on Thursday.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate the milestone anniversary and the 4th of July.

Paul and Phyllis Harp met in the early 1940s.  Paul, a World War II veteran, was introduced to Phyllis by his sister just before he left for the war.

It was love at first sight.

"When I got ready to go, I grabbed my sister and kissed her and then she was standing there and so I grabbed her and kissed her," said Paul.

"I told his sister at the time I'm going to marry that guy someday," said Phyllis.

A few years later, they tied the knot on July 4, 1943, but Paul had to leave for war.

"I was overseas for a year and a half -- went over right after the invasion in Europe," he said.

The couple made it through the war and have been happily married ever since.

"You never think about divorce, you just think about murder every once in a while," laughed Phyllis.

The couple is celebrating their love and showing their patriotic pride.

In a time when 70 years of marriage is rare, Paul and Phyllis offer this advice.

"Stick to it even when things don't go just right -- you have to compromise.. someone has to give in sometimes."

Phyllis is 88-years-old and Paul is 95, going on 96 in just a few weeks.  They say they hope for as many more years together as possible.
