ATLANTA -

A rain-heavy forecast couldn't dampen the spirits of the estimated 60,000 runners and wheelchair races that turned out for this year's Peachtree Road Race.

The Wheelchair Division got the race started with a crackling amount of excitement. Josh Cassidy won the men's wheelchair division in 21:14.

According to the Road Race's Twitter page, an airline lost Cassidy's chair. He almost considered not coming to this year's race. According to the Road Race's Twitter page, an airline lost Cassidy's chair.

He almost considered not coming to this year's race, but he later found  it at baggage claim in Toronto – where he lives.

The Elite Men runners were off to a flying start at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, with Mosinet Geremew of Ethiopia crossing the finish line first in 28:04 -- despite a steady drizzle of rain in metro Atlanta.

Lineth Chepkurui won the Elite Women's division with a time of 32:07. Afterward, and still beaded with sweat, an enthusiastic Chepkurui told Good Day Atlanta's Tacoma Perry: "I'm feeling better today and I'm so grateful!"

Reports indicate the women paced at an average five-minute mile.

Up to 60,000 runners hit the city streets Thursday in the 10K race, a Fourth of July tradition in Atlanta that's billed as the largest road race in the U.S. It's believed it's the first time the race has been run in the rain in almost 20 years.

The race began under yellow-flag conditions warning runners to use caution because of the wet weather.

With the race arriving a few months after the Boston Marathon bombing, organizers had extra police officers and security cameras along the route.

Cardinal, leaders meet about NYPD-community relations

Timothy Cardinal Dolan gathered religious and city leaders with the focus of how to ease tensions between police and the community in advance of this Saturday's march to protest the death of Eric Garner. Some of the leaders in this group are rarely photographed together, let alone seated at the same table. But they were brought together over concerns about possible protest violence by the cardinal, one of the most powerful figures in the city and who commands respect across the board.
