Bus drivers' strike averted in Phoenix metro area

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Union and bus company officials say they've signed a temporary agreement that will keep Valley Metro buses in the Phoenix metropolitan area running until at least midnight July 30.

First Transit operates the buses and officials said Tuesday afternoon that negotiations on a contract will resume next week.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1433 represents about 400 bus drivers. Union officials credited Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton for temporarily avoiding a work stoppage that would have affected hundreds of workers and thousands of passengers.

A potential bus drivers' strike would have shut down nearly half of Valley Metro's routes primarily in Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert and into Phoenix and Scottsdale.

After negotiations unraveled over the past month, bus drivers voted overwhelmingly June 19 to authorize a strike. A federal mediator then intervened.
