Fire Caused By Fireworks Misuse Prompts Heightened Safety

Los Angeles, CA -

Concerns are growing over fireworks safety, and the chance of brush fires for this holiday weekend.

(FOX 11 / CNS) A fire that caused an estimated $200,000 in damage to a carpet outlet and an adjoining barber shop in unincorporated Walnut Park was sparked by an employee of the carpet store as he played with fireworks near the business, authorities said today.

The fire at Discount Carpet at 2812 E. Florence Ave. was reported at 5:20 p.m. Monday, said Deputy Mark Pope of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. The store and an adjoining barber shop were engulfed in flames when deputies and firefighters reached the scene, he said.

"They discovered the likely cause of the fire was fireworks,'' he said. "The estimated loss to the businesses was in excess of $200,000.'' An employee of the carpet store was setting off fireworks at the rear of the business and somehow touched off the blaze, said Lt. Todd Deeds of the sheriff's Century Station.

"As you can see, fireworks can be very dangerous,'' Deeds said. "Even 'Safe and Sane' fireworks are illegal in unincorporated Los Angeles County, as well as most cities in Los Angeles County.''

The employee was not arrested, he said. The fire was being investigated by the sheriff's Arson/Explosives Detail.
