Ex-commissioner Moreno pleads guilty to federal corruption charges

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A well-known Chicago politician has his day in court Monday.

Former Cook County Commissioner Joseph Moreno pled guilty to federal corruption charges.

Moreno served 16 years on the Cook Cook County Board, now if a federal judge follows the federal sentencing guidelines, Moreno could end up serving just as much time in prison.

Moreno was arrested a year ago and charged with using his influence as a county commissioner to steer county business to a minority businessman who had loaned him $100,000. When the business arrived, the loan to Moreno was forgiven.

He's also admitted to accepting a $5,000 cash bribe to pave the way for a waste transfer station in Cicero. Regarding that bribe, Moreno was heard on tape saying, "I don't want to be a hog, I just want to be a pig. Hogs get slaughtered, pigs get fat." His attorney is Richard Kling.

"It's a horrible time. It is a horrible time. For many years he served the taxpayers of the county. He did some good things and now he did some bad things. And he is remorseful, he's regretful and obviously he's facing the consequences when he's sentenced," Kling said.

Moreno has not been cooperating with the feds in this case. He's only willing to admit to what he did wrong.

Both sides agree that in this case the sentencing guidelines call for 14 to about 17 years. Kling says he will ask for much less than that and a lesser sentence is probably likely. A sentencing date is set for October 17.
