Two Phila Hospitals Refusing To Hire Smokers

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Starting Monday, two Philadelphia hospitals will no longer hire smokers.

The hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia are joining dozens of hospitals nationwide as they implement this policy.

Penn has more than 28,000 employees at its health centers throughout the city

CHOP has about 12,000, and plans to test it's applicants to see if they're smokers.

Penn plans to trust the word of potential new employees.

This new policy doesn't affect current workers.

A study done earlier this year found that employers lose an average $6,000 dollars a year per smoker.

That's due in part to an increase in health insurance premiums and lost productivity or smoke breaks.
