DETROIT (WJBK) -

Former prosecutor and hospital executive Mike Duggan says he'll run for Detroit mayor as a write-in candidate.

Last week, the Court of Appeals kept him off the August primary ballot due to a dispute over his residency.

At that time, Duggan told Fox 2 a write-in campaign would be "extremely difficult." But Duggan says his change of heart was due to overwhelming support from voters.

Duggan says he will need to achieve 15,000 to 20,000 votes in the Aug. 6 Primary to advance to the November general election.

It's been 40 years since Detroit had a mayor who is white, but polls show Duggan, who is white, has strong name recognition and support. Detroit is more than 80 percent black.

Two courts had said Duggan doesn't qualify for the ballot because he submitted petitions less than a year after becoming a registered voter in the city, a violation of the Detroit City Charter. He moved to Detroit from Livonia, a suburb, in 2012.

He needs to finish in the top two to make to the general election ballot in November.
