Happy at work? Research says 70 percent of Americans hate their jobs

It's a problem that money can't fix - unhappy workers. Researchers say seven in ten people hate their jobs and even if they were given a raise, they would still gripe.

Recognition, or lack of it, is the number one reason people are happy or unhappy at work. Pay is not even mentioned in the top five complaints.

After appearing on reality show "Does Someone Have to Go?" employees at a Downers Grove credit card processing company are back to reality and sharing what makes them unhappy in the workplace.

"One of my big wishes is to have more flexible work hours," says employee Lorraine Wolfe. "I do come in an hour early every day, it would be cool if I could leave an hour early. It's hard to say that in front of... because he's sitting right there but I'm being honest."

Lorraine Wolfe's boss was sitting behind our camera but that didn't stop her from sharing her wish list.

"I'm a department of one and I think I'd be happier if I had somebody to work with because I think sometimes I feel a little lonely," Wolfe says.

It turns out Wolfe is not alone. 70 percent of Americans hate their jobs.

"The number one reason seems to be a lack of recognition, a lack of rewards for what people are doing and when we're talking about a lack of reward, we aren't necessarily talking about getting more money," says Psychologist Elizabeth Lombardo.

Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo is the author of "A Happy You." She says uncertainty, dislike for the boss and culture shock also top the list of complaints.

"The culture doesn't fit for them so for example when we have a lot of Gen Y people coming into an older culture where their values and their approach and just the way that they work is totally different than the Gen Ys, that causes a lot of discontent," Lombardo explains.

Employees at Velocity Merchant Services in Downers Grove tell FOX 32 News that appearing on TV highlighted what works and what doesn't

"People have learned how to communicate with each other on just more real level without hurting feelings and everyone is held accountable now for their jobs and their actions and everything else," Operations Manager Nancy Jalajel says.

The 2013 State of the American Workplace report estimates unhappy workers cost the country up to more than $500 billion dollars a year.  The survey was taken by 150,000 people nationwide.

Dr. Lombardo is hosting a "Happiness in the Workplace" seminar Friday morning from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Deloittle Services LP (111 S. Wacker Drive, 24th Floor; Chicago, IL 60606).
