Heat Alert Issued; Cooling Shelter Information

Posted: Updated:

The LA County Health Department has issued a heat alert through Monday July 1 for Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys as well as the San Fernando, San Gabriel and East San Gabriel Valleys.

The department encourages everyone to remember to take special care of themselves, children, the elderly, and their pets.

"Extreme heat such as this is not just an inconvenience, it can be dangerous and even deadly," said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer. "When temperatures are high, prolonged sun exposure may cause dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

There are cooling centers throughout affected areas for residents without access to air conditioning.

The heatwave has begun as a strong upper-level high pressure system is slowly building west towards California. The onshore flow continues to weaken and the marine layer is shrinking. Skies will be sunny with even warmer temperatures today from yesterday. The warm-up will continue through the weekend with Sunday likely being the hottest day of the heat wave. All valleys, the Inland Empire, and all deserts and mountains are under excessive heat warnings starting either Friday and continuing into Sunday.

West winds are expected to keep the heat from reaching the coastline, but people seeking relief at southern beaches are being cautioned that a southerly swell will bring higher surf and increased risk of rip currents.

Deaths can occur in vulnerable populations particularly very young children and frail elderly. Over 700 deaths occurred in Chicago during a heatwave in the late 90's. Equally large numbers of deaths have occurred in Europe during heatwave. It is critically important to never leave children, elderly people, or pets unattended in homes with no air conditioning and particularly in vehicles, even with the windows ‘cracked' or open, as temperatures inside can quickly rise to life-threatening levels. If you have an elderly neighbor make sure that they get to a cooling center or other air conditioned space between 10 am and 8 PM "

*NOTE - Please take care of your Pets during the Hot Weather. NEVER leave them inside a vehicle for any period of time.  If you have to leave your pets outdoors, make sure to provide them with plenty of Water and Shade.  Your Pet will Thank You!
