Feds Raid Alleged Illegal Slaughterhouse in W. Pa.

Posted: Updated:

Agriculture agents have raided a suspected illegal slaughterhouse just outside the city.

Authorities aren't naming the target of their investigation, but confirmed Wednesday's raid is part of an ongoing probe into the barnyard in Jefferson Hills, a few miles south of the city.

Authorities say they expected to find about a dozen chickens, but instead seized 52 of the birds along with seven pigeons, two ducks and a peacock.

Animal Friends, a nearby nonprofit animal shelter, helped seize and house the animals. They plan to move the animals to farm sanctuaries.

Officials say two chickens had to be euthanized because they were in poor health, while another was found dead at the scene.

Many of the other birds had bald patches, lice and other signs of neglect.
