Christie Slams Supreme Court's Gay Marriage Rulings

TRENTON, N.J. -

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie slammed the Supreme Court for two landmark rulings that have brought historic gains for gay rights.

In 5-4 decisions, the justices ruled Wednesday that same-sex marriages can resume in California, and they struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act.

That law prevented gay couples from getting more than 1,100 benefits, which other married couples were entitled to. They include survivor's benefits for military spouses -- and the ability to file taxes jointly as a married couple.

It's a major victory for Democrats, but not everyone is thrilled with the decision.

On his "Ask the Governor" radio show, Christie made very clear on the "Ask the Governor" radio show that he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.

"I don't think the ruling was appropriate," Christie said. "I think it was wrong. I think ... it's typical of what problems we've seen in the New Jersey Supreme Court."

The governor went on to say, "You're talking about changing an institution that's over 2,000 years old. Seems to me that the Democrats are putting increasing the minimum wage on the ballot. That's important enough to put on the ballot, but gay marriage is not? That's something the people should decide, but not whether same-sex marriage should happen in New Jersey?"

Christie says that if New Jersey residents voted for it, he would be obligated to follow suit.
