Calle 16 movement wants to bring more art to downtown Phoenix

PHOENIX -

A group of local artists and muralists are joining forces.  They're hope is to bring more art to downtown Phoenix and its neighbors.

The movement is called Calle 16 and they want to create art that will live there forever.

"Art gives a city its soul, it's culture."

Phoenix artist and muralist Hugo Medina has been painting his whole life.  His work is prominently displayed across the city.  In fact, his newest work is located on the backside of the Renaissance Hotel downtown.

His goal: to get more art in the city.

"My goal is to make Phoenix an international destination for artists and muralists and for people to come down and want to do murals downtown," he said.

Medina is now joining forces with other artists to do just that -- through a movement they call Calle 16 -- or 16th Street -- a street where many murals are already located.

"We want to help showcase the beauty and talent of Phoenix," he said.

Medina says art in a downtown setting can bring a community together.

A mural at 2nd Avenue and Roosevelt was done by local artists with the help of the community.

"Our first mural -- we had 150 people paining on it, so the more community we can build, the stronger Phoenix we will have because we will come together for a cause that's bigger than what we are," Medina explained.
