PHOENIX -

A Maricopa County detention officer is undergoing surgery after an inmate bit off part of her ear during a scuffle in the Lower Buckeye Jail.

Sheriff's officials say the officer was conducting a routine check of the cell Monday afternoon when inmate Bobby Ruiz allegedly jumped on her back and bit part of her ear off.

"In the process of the assault he bit the ear, half the ear off of our officer... we can't find half the ear, he may have swallowed it," said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

They say the unidentified detention officer was recently hired by the sheriff's office.

"I don't think the public understands sometimes what a rough tough job that our officers have in the jail system."

Officials say Ruiz faces charges of aggravated assault on an officer.

He's been placed on lockdown consisting of a diet of bread and water.

Sheriff's officials Ruiz is in jail after being convicted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

A handful of other inmates helped subdue the suspect. They'll be rewarded with a free pizza dinner.
