Ga. woman confronts swimming fear to compete in Triathlon

Posted: Updated:

According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, more than 70 percent of drowning victims are adults are never learned how to swim.

Good Day Atlanta's Tacoma Perry recently spoke with a woman who says she overcame her fear to learn this life-saving skill. She says you should do the same, too.

As a child, Brenda Tran says she could never really enjoy going to the pool or the beach.

"I would just try to stay waist high, nothing over my head. I would tip-toe. That's about it, and I would not jump in," she said.

Brenda says that fear followed her into adulthood. That's because she never learned how to swim.

"Culturally, it wasn't widespread popularity growing  up and the areas that I lived in, pools were not accessible," Brenda said.

That all changed, she says, when she made the life-changing decision to complete a triathlon. The 36-year-old says she had know choice but to push her fears aside.
