Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Thousands of people participated in a Detroit march commemorating the 50th anniversary of one that took place in 1963 with Martin Luther King Jr. The civil rights icon visited Detroit on June 23, 1963, to lead at least 125,000 people in a freedom walk. King also previewed his "I Have a Dream" speech.

Saturday's walk down Woodward Avenue culminated in a riverfront rally at Hart Plaza. Martin Luther King III, Mayor Dave Bing and the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were among those who participated.

Detroit NAACP President Wendell Anthony said the march "signifies that the work for freedom and justice must continue" in Detroit and worldwide.

Sharpton says it's important to keep fighting for justice and marchers weren't merely taking "a nostalgia trip down Woodward."

Nearly all 1,100 facilities providing services in the city's new universal pre-kindergarten program are ready to open on time after passing health and safety inspections. City officials said Friday they expect the eight remaining pre-K schools to remedy violations by Sept. 4's opening day. If they don't, affected children will be temporarily enrolled in other facilities.
