Judges: Gov. Brown Must Reduce Prison Population

Sacramento, CA -

GET OUT OF JAIL EARLY CARD

Irony:

Reporting on California's High Court order to release almost 10,000 prisoners early while listening to the police scanner on crimes in progress.

There was the man on the roof of the industrial building in North Hollywood; the one witnesses saw cutting copper tubing at 2 o'clock in the morning.

The two guys, crowbars in hand, walking up a residential street trying all the doors to parked cars.

The man seen holding a knife to a woman's throat and then, leaving her in the car, walked into a convenience store, knife in hand. The woman was his mom by the way, but I digress.*

And the ex-boyfriend outside his ex-girlfriend's window trying to remove the screen, the same one who apparently had forgotten she had a restraining order against him.

Yup, and that was only a few minutes worth of calls I heard and that police had to answer this morning.

Copper theft? No big deal.

A stolen stereo from a car, who cares?

So he held a knife to his mom's neck, he wasn't really going to hurt her.

And what's a poor lovelorn guy to do when he wants to see his girlfriend but she won't open the door?

I'm being facetious, in case you can't tell.

Some would say these are all low-risk offenders; no big deal while others will tell you, IT IS A BIG DEAL. Especially to the victims.

Just look at the rap sheet of any career criminal - they usually start "small" and work their way up. Or down.

For example, the three transients charged with killing a woman on Hollywood Boulevard because she wouldn't' give them a dollar reportedly have criminal records and if that's true, I bet you they started with small offenses.

Then there's the rate of recidivism. Yeah, it's a vicious circle and that's why the prisons are overcrowded and conditions poor.

And that's why the State's High Court wants some of the "low-risk" criminals released early; to lower the prison population.

About ten thousand inmates who state experts say are no danger based on their age, gender, and prior criminal history could be released if the court gets its way. Even though many of those "low-risk" criminals may have committed some very serious crimes.

If that happens we'll also have to change that old saying, you know the one: "Do the Crime, Pay the Time".

How does "Do the Crime, Pay Half the Time" sound?

Or better yet, "Do the Crime, Pay Some of the Time. Maybe."

*While the knife-wielding man was inside the convenience story, his mother called 911 for help. LAPD arrived and although the man was agitated, officers were able to talk him into parting with his knife and into a pair of handcuff
