FOX 29 Gets Results: Frankford Sewer Grate

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

FOX 29 is working to get results for people who live near Griscom and Overington Streets in Philadelphia's Frankford neighborhood.

That's where a storm drain was left gaping open.

As you're about to see, not only is it an eye sore, it could be very dangerous!

"I've seen this over the years, over two three years..."

Victoria Rose says it's clear what happened: a heavy vehicle must have cut the corner too sharply and run over the edge of the cast iron storm water inlet. Ripping it tight out if the sidewalk! The manhole cover popped off and was later stolen.

"My reaction was: oh, wow. Are they serious? This is a hole!"

That, she says, was nearly two weeks ago. And ever since, she gets nervous when walking the neighborhood youngsters to the elementary school up the street.

"They like to run. They run and see this. I'm shouting, 'Hey, stop! No, wait!' I'm scared they're going to fall in there!"

Her son Nasir is seven.

"What do you think would happen, Nasir, if you fell in there?"asked FOX 29's Bruce Gordon

"I'd never get out," responded Nasir.

With all the young children around, it's an accident waiting to happen. Victoria says she called the city's 311 helpline, three times!

"The automated system tells you to press something. It connected me to something. It rang. That's it."

"So you got nowhere," asked Gordon

"Nowhere."

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon called the water department and, in just a few hours, a supervisor was on the scene. He barricaded the damaged inlet to keep curious kids away, then called his supervisor to report the problem. It's now in the system and on the list for repairs.
