'Tony Soprano' Actor James Gandolfini Dies

Posted: Updated:

James Gandolfini suffered a massive heart attack and died in Italy, according to Variety. He was on his way to the Taomina Film Festival.

James Gandolfini is best remembered for playing mob boss Tony Soprano on HBO's hit show "The Sopranos." His imposing presence, coupled with a balance of violence and vulnerability, made him the perfect anti-hero for the cable drama.

"He was special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone no matter their title or position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth and his humility," HBO said in a statement.

Gandolfini was born in Westwood, New Jersey, and he attended Rutgers University.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Lin, a son and a baby daughter.
