AMA Recognizes Obesity As Illness

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO, IL -

At the annual American Medical Association (AMA) meeting in Chicago, doctors voted to recognize obesity as an illness.

The vote had its opposition though. Some members on the council said that "obesity results from personal choices to overeat or live a sedentary lifestyle." Therefore, it isn't an illness.

But proponents say that obesity is "similar to other diseases (e.g. hypertension, diabetes, lung cancer) that result from a combination of genetics and environmental factors."

The AMA's rulings often influence how policymakers in Washington pass medical policy and health regulations.

Some worry that classifying obesity as a disease will lead to higher health care costs without effectively improving patient outcomes.
