The ‘mane’ attraction: Busch Gardens' lion cubs

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Years from now, they'll grow into the King and Queens of the Jungle.  But for now, they're just darn cute.

Three lion cubs are getting used to their new home at Busch Gardens, and today we got a close-up look at the adorable trio.

The cubs have spent months on the road before settling in Tampa. They were born in South Africa.

Two of the cubs are sisters, born March 20. The third is an unrelated male, born Feb. 20. All three cubs have genetic lines from the Kalahari and Kruger regions.

The cubs come from a private zoological facility in the country. When they're big enough, they'll move into Busch Gardens' Edge of Africa area and meet the other lions and hyenas.

Park official Kelly Fad said Tuesday that the male will likely grow to be about 500 pounds – the park's largest lion.

For now, they're just content with playing with each other and getting used to the Florida heat and humidity.

The park is holding a name-the-cubs promotion on its Facebook page. Fans can vote for names after 'liking' the page: https://www.facebook.com/BuschGardensTampaBay?v=app_337393606296654

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
