Tips for choosing the best child care for you

Posted: Updated:

Starting July 1, ratings of Georgia child-care facilities will be made public. It's makes it much easier for concerned parents to make informed choices about the child care they select for their sons and daughters.

But, of course, choosing child care for your boy or girl goes beyond the ratings. Good Day Atlanta's Tacoma Perry has some valuable advice for you!

At the Frazer Center, these boys and girls learn by interacting with their environment. And, when it comes to choosing child care, Teresa Prestwood with Quality Care for Children says she believe parents would greatly benefit from using the same technique.

She also advises parents to visit a prospective child-care facility at different times during a day to get a broad understanding of how the day is planned and how children respond to it.

"You want to make sure that teachers are down on the ground and interacting with the children on their level," Prestwood said. "If you have an infant, you want to make sure the infant has room to roll around, that they're not confined to any one thing for a long period of time."

Prestwood also urges parents to make sure safety precautions are observed by all child-care staff during the visit to the facility.

"Washing their hands when they're diapering before and after," she said. "Do they have the appropriate ratio in the classroom? Is the room set up so that the kids can't get into anything harmful?"

Make sure toys are present and ask them how often they clean them.  Also, it's very important to ask about the lesson plan in place.

Prestwood said, "Even with infants, what kinds of things are they working on each given day? If they don't have a general idea of what they're working on, then you might want to consider that."

I think this is what many of us assume about outlet mall shopping -- we get rock bottom prices on everything from clothes to housewares on brand names that are either leftovers from last year or this year's overstock. Well, it's not quite like that.
