Arizona woman in the running for 'Extreme Huntress' competition

PEORIA, Ariz. -

Big game hunting is not for everyone. But a valley woman is in the hunt to become the next "Extreme Huntress." She's one of 10 women in the nation to be picked for the honor.

We talked with her about some of her career highlights.

“This is my first trophy ever, harvested first hunt,” says Mindy Arthurs, pointing to a black bear.

This black bear made the prestigious Boone and Crocket Record Book. It was Mindy Arthurs’ first hunt in 2008.

“That was what really lit my fire and things spread rapidly after that.”

Five years later, Arthurs has 18 trophies of her own.

“I’ve harvested four really nice black bear, harvested four nice mountain lion myself, a couple really nice white tail from Texas.”

Arthurs is now one of 10 women in the nation chosen to compete to be the next Extreme Huntress. It's part of the 'Eye of the Hunter' program. The public now votes online to further narrow down the field. The winner is featured on a hunting show and gets a free hunt.

“So I need Arizona to get behind me and vote if they would. Arizona here is one of my favorite placed to hunt.”

Arthurs says her husband, a Peoria dentist, first got her involved in hunting. Now their 11 and 13 year old boys hunt too.

This mother of two knows how to shoot a gun and a bow.

“You can see the mountain lions, we have a few up here.”

Arthurs is hunting in Canada soon and hopes to hunt in Africa someday.

“There is some fear involved, but that's part of what makes it so exciting. It’s mentally challenging, its physically challenging it’s just that quest and that pursuit.”

Online voting ends Saturday. The final four are announced in the fall. The winner is announced in January.
