Queens dad donates kidney to son

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

This is the best Father's Day gift that a dad could get: the gift of life. A young father from Queens needed a kidney, and his 55-year-old father donated his.

Leonard Burke, 32, knows just how lucky he is. This is his second kidney transplant surgery. His wife, Rhonda, donated one of hers three years ago. But it failed.

So last week, his dad, Ronald, donated his and it was a success. The surgery was performed at the North Shore University Hospital transplant center in Manhasset, Long Island.

The whole Burke family lives in a two-family home in Richmond Hill. Now Leonard can be home for Father's Day to celebrate. He and his wife have an 18-month-old daughter, Isabel.

Dr. Ernesto Molmenti, the surgical director at the transplant center, said that often people who need a kidney are afraid to ask their parents, fearing it could be dangerous for someone over the age of 50. But he said there is no need to worry.

Leonard said he is happy and that he doesn't need anything else for Father's Day.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
