I-Team: Before you pack up, be sure to lock up!

Posted: Updated:

Crimes of all types occur year-round, but there are ways to stop some crimes that are typically related to the summer. The FOX I-Team's Dana Fowle has these summer smart tips for you!

It's that time of year! We all get excited about leaving town and going on vacation, so we tend to tell everyone about it. But, a word of caution not to be so fast spread your good news – especially on social media.

The danger is announcing something like that online is that it can inadvertently read like this: "No one will be in my house all next!!" Authorities say numerous break-ins have happened after a post like this.

Also, back at the homestead, shrubs and bushes around your home tend to grow fuller during the summer months. These can be a great hiding place for burglars.

And, then there's general home safety. Before you leave town, double check to make sure your fire alarms are in working order. If something catches fire, then possibly a neighbor can hear the alarm. As long as it's working, it can trigger security device.

Lastly, two-thirds of us take extra safety precautions when we head out of town. But, here is where we can get a bit sloppy. According to the FBI, more than half of the home burglaries occur during a regular day. So, even if you're just darting out for a second to run a quick errands, lock and close your garage door.

We already know about some of the fees our banks charge -- the monthly fee, the overdraft charge, out-of-network and minimum balance fees. That's standard stuff. But did you know that the average checking account has 30 fees attached?
