Local groups teaches young men how to be better fathers

DETROIT (WJBK) -

As we prepare to celebrate Father's Day this weekend, a local group is celebrating their success in helping to change lives.

The Mission of New Young Fathers is to help teach young fathers the importance and responsibility that comes with being a dad. Why? The statistics are painful.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one out of three children live without a father at home. These children have the highest odds of ending up behind bars and are more likely to get into drugs and alcohol.

"A lot of children I come across, they come from single-parent homes and they don't have a relationship with their father," said Steven Dandridge, founder of the group. "And that's horrible because they didn't ask to be here."

The group launched their web site in 2008 and has since helped thousands of young dads across the state.

Plus, on Sunday, another group helping young fathers will host an event on Belle Isle. Join Young Fathers Standing United on June 16 from noon - 7 p.m. at Shelter #8.
