AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

It may not seem like it was only two weeks ago, but the Mahaffy family remembers the exact moment a tornado tore through the town of Goodrich and completely gutted the house they once called home.

"Crazy the devastation and everything that happened in just one single second," said Jennifer Slaght.

The twister destroyed it, the property pummeled, but thankfully the people inside survived. Ashley Mahaffy saved the lives of her little ones and her own, shielding the family from the violent wind storm, bringing them to the basement, their bodies huddled together waiting for the weather to break.

"We're very lucky and very blessed that we made it through," she said.

By the grace of God, they say.

"Your priorities just get put into place," Mahaffy said.

What matters most is not the things in your life, but the people in it.

In Auburn Hills inside Toby Keith's I Love This Bar and Grill, a fundraiser was held Wednesday for the Mahaffy family to help them raise money and to lift their spirits.

The Magic Bus Band filled the room with fun music, and everyone in attendance filled the Mahaffys' hearts with love.

"It's incredibly nice that everyone's being so generous," Mahaffy said. "It's awesome all these people coming out here for us."

"I think it will touch them very deeply, and they're a type of family to give back in return," Slaght said.

They will start by sharing a valuable lesson, one they learned that saved their lives.

"If you hear a tornado siren, please get in the basement or your safest shelter spot. Don't assume a tornado can't hit you," said Thomas Mahaffy.

"I'll never, ever not go in the basement when I hear tornado sirens ever again in my life," Ashley Mahaffy said.

Now the Mahaffy family is hoping their lesson will become yours.
