Arizona Sen. Flake's son under fire for racist online postings

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

The son of Arizona Senator Jeff Flake is coming under fire after Flake’s teenage son made some very controversial online postings. The comments span his social media sites -- from Twitter to Facebook to YouTube.

Some of them are months old or even years old.

Since this story hit, the privacy settings on Tanner Flake’s various social media accounts have been turned on.

The 15-year-old’s Twitter feed is locked now, but screenshots from Buzzfeed.com show gay slurs and anti-Semitic language. In one post, he called Mexicans "the scum of the earth" and in another, he said, "stupid little n-----."

On YouTube, we found more of the same.

Tanner wrote "die in fire f-----" and within his screen name for an iPhone game, Tanner Flake has a racial epithet.

Just one week ago Senator Flake was in the news room sharing with us the good times he had on an island trip with his sons.

“For me it was just a wonderful time to be with my boys. Congressional life isn’t too friendly for families sometimes,” Flake said.

But now the senator is singing a different tune – he’s out apologizing for Tanner's actions.

“I'm very disappointed in my teenage son's words, and I sincerely apologize for the insensitivity. This language is unacceptable, anywhere... I've already spoken with him about this, he has apologized, and I apologize as well,” reads a statement from Flake.

As of yet, Tanner himself hasn't apologized for his language in public. On Twitter, some have called for the Flake family to meet with civil right leaders.

What's more is that Tanner identifies himself as the son of the senator in several comments on YouTube -- but it didn't stop him from posting hate online.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
