PHOENIX -

A wildlife sanctuary is now caring for two bobcat kittens which were turned in to an Arizona Humane Society shelter in Phoenix.

The Humane Society called the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center to pick up the kittens because the Humane Society isn't equipped to handle bobcats.

The center is a nonprofit that rescues and rehabilitates sick, injured, orphaned, displaced and abandoned wild animals. Most are released back into the wild. They will begin training the kits to reintroduction into nature, which will take about one year.

That's because bobcats usually stay with their mother for the year after their birth, learning valuable life skills such as how to hunt for themselves.

"This next year they'll eventually they have to have their vaccines and then they'll go with a foster mom and then the foster mom will teach them to be a bobcat and so they'll be around adult bobcats," says Linda Searles of Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center.

Humane Society spokeswoman Bretta Nelson says the kittens appear to be about 9 weeks old.

She says people who encounter a wild animal appearing to be orphaned should observe the animal for a few days because mothers often return after looking for food.
