Pellet fire near Show Low expected to burn for days

Posted: Updated:

Multiple agencies are working to put out a pellet plant fire outside of Show Low, which is expected to burn for days. The blaze broke out Tuesday afternoon at Forest Energy Corporation.

The fire temporarily led to the closure of a stretch of U.S. 60, which was later reopened. The cause of the fire is not official, but it's possible an excavator unloading logs may have sparked the flames.

Air tankers are dropping water on the flames to keep the fire from jumping the road and threatening homes.

Show Low fire officials say the blaze is mostly being fueled by scrub oaks and juniper trees, and not ponderosa pines.

The town's fire department is being assisted by fire officials from Linden, Lakeside, Navajo County Emergency Management Team, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Forest Energy Corporation manufactures wood fuel pellets, horse and animal bedding and densified wood fire logs, among other products. We're told the workers are still going to work, but are not operating the plant. They will help Show Low Fire monitor the fire.
