Hite Discusses Nearly 3,800 Layoff Notices Sent To PSD Staff

PHILADELPHIA -

Shock and pain are still sinking in over the School District of Philadelphia 's so-called "doomsday budget."

District administrators announced deep cuts in jobs and school programs on Friday.

In all, close to 3,800 teachers and support staff received layoff notices in an effort to fill a budget gap of more than $300 million. There were cuts in art, music and sports, and also getting layoff notices were almost every assistant principal in the district.

Some cuts can be rescinded if the district gets more funding this summer.

Administrators have asked the city and state to kick in $180 million and unions about $130 million.

Superintendent Dr. William Hite joined "Good Day Philadelphia" on Monday morning to talk about the budget crisis.

In an email, Hite said he was "profoundly upset" by the layoffs.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
