Jobs, Wall Street, Main Street and your 401K

WHY HAS THE STOCK MARKET HIT NEW HIGHS?

Because the Federal Reserve has been dumping $85 Billion dollars into the financial markets every month. That does two things. It keeps long term interest rates low, so it'll boost spending, housing, etc and stimulate the economy,. but it also  sends investors into in the stock market looking for higher returns than they can get on bonds.. That's what has lifted stocks.

HOW LONG WILL THE FED DO THIS?

Until they see the economy is growing enough on it's own.

ENTER THE LATEST JOBS REPORT; 175,000 NEW JOBS  ADDED IN MAY.

This is not enough to pull us out of the jobs crisis so it is weak. Wall street loves it. It shows some jobs are being created--but not enough to spur 'real' 'significant' growth, which means the Fed will probably keep dumping billions into the market.

Soooooooo... weak news on Main Street turns out to be good news on Wall Street.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR : Signs that the economy is going great guns. When that happens the Fed will begin to ease out of it's stimulus plan. When that happens the winds will change--and good news on Main Street may mean bad news on Wall Street. Your nice 401-K statements may begin look sad.

HOW LONG TILL THAT HAPPENS: Estimates are that it will happen before the end of the year.
