HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

After a fatal crash, 26-year-old Leo Evans is facing charges that could put him in prison for years. He is accused of street racing, a dangerous game that can have deadly consequences.

"They were coming up the street, and one of the guys lost control of the car, hit the tree and then hit the house," said Corey Davis. "The other car that was in the altercation sped off. It never stopped. They kept going. That shows you right there that they don't care about life."

Police say Evans fled the scene in the crash that killed 18-year-old Jaylin Heath.

Heath was in the back seat of his 2006 Grand Prix mangled like a toy car on impact. He died at the scene. Two friends in his car were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses say Evans was racing Heath and his friends down Puritan in Highland Park.

Sunday, Evans was charged with three felonies, including second-degree murder, reckless driving causing death and reckless driving causing impairment of a bodily function.

Police say he is still in custody awaiting a preliminary hearing on June 11.

"My heart goes out to the family to have to bury your child so young. He's only 18, and he just had a child, so he was just beginning to be a dad," said Tanya Belle.

A picture showing Heath holding his baby daughter, London, was taken just three months before his death.

Evans is not the only one facing charges. The driver of the car in which Heath was a passenger is still in the hospital on the long road to recovery, but police say once he is released, he will also be charged with second-degree murder.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is holding its monthly board meeting, two days after it heard from a panel on what it needs to do to improve its accountability and efficiency and restore public trust.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
