Wednesday's Child 2013 Reunion: We Love Knotts Berry Farm!

Posted: Updated:

Who wants to ride the Silver Bullet? It's a scream fest for sure! Darnell grabbed the safety bar tightly as the coaster roared through Knotts Berry Farm. Darnell is one of the hundreds of Wednesday's Child kids and families who attended reunion 2013.

Darnell is also one of our success stories.  Adopted as a little boy, he is now off to college.

He had his pick of several schools but stayed with Cal State LA as it is close to Hollywood. Darnell is a student of film and attends one of the top arts high school's in the nation, right on the Cal State LA campus. As his mom watched her three (adopted) kids ride the rides at Knotts she noted that Darnell is the first male in his family to go to college.

Tapping into his film knowledge, I asked Darnell to help direct this shoot. He helped with the interviews and the concept for telling this story. We put it to song as another one of our kids all grown up, Jamal, is a hip hop artist. Jamal co-wrote a song just for kids from foster care. It's called "faith in TRUTH" under the artist name TEAM WC. (R&B singer Lotis is on vocals).

Jamal knows the story, and the ride, all too well. He was also adopted as a boy and wrote lyrics as part of his therapy in foster care.  He attended the Knotts reunion with his parents and two of their five adopted children.  Mom and dad and one sister all held hands as they strolled the Boardwalk, a new Knotts attraction area.

Jamal and Darnell chased each other around in the Wheeler Dealer bumper cars.

It was a beautiful day and beautiful to see our kids all in smiles.  As the song says "hold your head up high, we're all in this together."  The Knotts reunion certainly proved that. Families packed into the Calico Mine ride and gave a big wave as the train took off.

FOX 11 has showcased children in foster waiting for forever families for 18 years. The Freddie Mac Foundation sponsors Wednesday's Child. More than 500 children have been adopted.

TEAM WC is performing at the June 23rd LA Sparks & Celebrity basketball game, benefitting LA County DCFS Foster Youth. Download this flyer for more information.

    A Rare Condition

    A Rare Condition

Hell on earth, that's how some doctors describe Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa also known as E.B. It's a horrible genetic disease that Nicky Zahorcak was born with. A lot of his skin is raw, the slightest touch can cause blisters that quickly spread. He says, "Right now, all the bandages that you see everywhere even on my sides, they're all raw skin." His mother Silvia says very few people know about this rare condition and she wants to change that.
