Suspected Germantown Serial Rapist Under Arrest, Police Say

PHILADELPHIA -

A suspected serial rapist targeting teens in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood is now behind bars.

Police say 22-year-old Antuane Brown was captured in this surveillance video.

The attacks date back to March 19. A gun has been used in all of them, and at least one was by a guy seen on surveillance video riding a bicycle and wearing a ski mask.

Police say all of the sexual assaults, involving girls between the ages of 12 and 17, took place within walking distance of Brown's home at East Price and Ardleigh streets.

Investigators say they found a BB gun, as well as clothes and other evidence, inside Brown's home. A bicycle chained to a fence out front was also confiscated.

When police got to the home overnight, an officer tells FOX 29's Steve Keeley all of the lights were on inside the house but nobody answered the door. So, police had to break down the doors. Inside were the 22-year-old, his live-in girlfriend, and a younger brother.

The mother, Tina Brown, told Keeley during an interview that she's convinced her son is not the guy seen on video released by police.

"I say, 'Why is he a suspect? Because he got a mountain bike?' And the captain told me, 'Yeah, because he got a mountain bike.' Like, I don't understand it. Kick my door in? He don't – he's not even the height of that boy. Like, I don't understand it," Brown said.

"You saw the surveillance video?" Keeley asked.

"Yes, I did," she answered. "Yes, I have. And I promise you, I promise you, anybody that know me, know if I thought that was my child, I would turn him in myself. Anybody that know me know that's what I'd do."

Asked what other evidence police might have had beside the bike, Brown said, "A neighbor called. A neighbor, a paranoid neighbor called. My son works every day. He has a girlfriend that lives here. I mean, what he need to what do you got to run out and rape something for? And all his time is accounted for, he's either at work or at home."

Brown said her 22-year-old son is a tire changer at a nearby Sam's Club, and he takes the bus to and from work. She said he's good kid.

She also complained that police put a shotgun to head of her other son, who is a minor and had been asleep.

Brown said she has looked at the police surveillance video a dozen times since her son was picked up, and there is no way that's her 5-foot-6-inch, older son.

However, police say that no judge would give them a middle-of-the-night search warrant without a significant amount of evidence.

The 22-year-old is being questioned Wednesday morning by the police department's Special Victims Unit.

A reward worth $2,500 had been offered in the case.
