Charging documents accuse a 24-year-old Minneapolis woman of escaping police custody by climbing through a hospital ceiling after hiding a loaded heroin needle in her crotch area.
Hennepin County deputies were in the process of booking Angel Benjamin on Friday when they realized she needed medical attention before entering the jail.
Deputies were searching Benjamin with a small metal detection wand when it sounded near her groin. According to charging documents, police said she denied having anything there but eventually admitted there was a needle containing heroin in her vaginal region and could not get it out.
Police transported Benjamin to the Hennepin County Medical Center to be examined. Afterward, she asked to use the bathroom and officers let her go in and close the door. After several minutes passed, a deputy knocked on the door and did not hear an answer.
The door was locked, and police asked HCMC to open it with a key. Once inside, police learned Benjamin had opened a ceiling panel and crawled out. Deputies and HCMC security personnel eventually found her in a stairwell and took her back into custody.
Benjamin was arrested on two separate warrants, one for driving after suspension in Hennepin County and another in Dakota County for motor vehicle theft. She is now also charged with felony escape from custody.
