DETROIT (WJBK) -

Over 300 4th graders from area schools gathered in Campus Martius in downtown Detroit on Tuesday to celebrate Recess Day.

The event brings awareness to the importance of physical activity and play. It is presented in partnership with Playworks, Institute for Health Population, City of Detroit Health and Wellness Department, Beaumont Health System, MGM Grand and The Wellness Plan. Other supporters include the Detroit Lions.

"Children who play are healthier and suffer less obesity and obesity related health problems such as diabetes and heart disease; and children who play do better in school and develop cognitive skills that are linked to learning and academic performance," said Mayor Dave Bing.

FOX 2's Amy Andrews is there and will have live updates throughout the day.
