NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A soldier stationed at Fort Drum, in northern New York, died in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced.

Pfc. Mariano M. Raymundo, 21, of Houston, Texas, died June 1, 2013, in Sharan, the Pentagon said. The military is investigating Raymundo's death but did not elaborate on the circumstances.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday, June 5, in Raymundo's honor.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my condolences to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of PFC Raymundo," Cuomo said in a statement. "We will honor the service of this Fort Drum soldier and we are grateful for this commitment to our country."

Raymundo, a wheeled vehicle mechanic, was assigned to the 210th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, which is based out of Fort Drum.

Raymundo joined the Army in November 2011 and deployed with his unit in support of operations in Afghanistan in January 2013.

Raymundo's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, a Certificate of Achievement, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge and Mechanic Bar, according to Fort Drum.

He leaves behind his mother and father, the Army said.
