Local EMTs Return From Oklahoma Storm Relief

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Aria Bucks EMT Bryan Elwell told FOX 29 nothing could have trained him for the trip he took down to Moore, Okla., following the EF-5 tornado that wiped out major portions of the community.

"I thought I would be prepared for what I would see in comparison to Hurricane Sandy," he said. "There's no comparison."

He and fellow EMT J.R. Smith drove out to help treat victims suffering from a variety of medical problems, seeing hundreds of patients in their week long work.

"A lot of foot injuries," Elwell said.  "A lot of extremely high blood pressure; stroke range blood pressure."

"Neighborhoods of homes were turned into farm fields, littered with debris," said Smith.  "You would never know that there were any buildings there."

Bryan said one of the more emotional moments came when he met a couple that survived the storm by taking cover in their bathroom.  When they came out, the bathroom was the only thing left standing.

They also say they took money from donations to fund their trip, and gave it to a church holding services for two children that died in the tornado.

Both say they came back with a deeper understanding of the human spirit, and coming together.

"I said it before I left, we're a community.  We're all human beings but it solidified it for me down in Oklahoma when I saw what was going on and how these people interacted with each other."
