Sunless tanners safe alternative to a natural tan, doctor says

Call it the tan in a can, the only safe way to get that bronze glow without exposing yourself to UV rays. Sunless tanners are gaining in popularity for good reason.

"Sunless tanners are perfectly safe to use. They are an excellent alternative to getting a natural sun tan. They don't increase your risk of skin cancer. It's important to remember that they do not protect you from the sun, so if you are using a self tanner, you still need to use a high SPF sunscreen to prevent sunburn," said Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Dr. Melissa Piliang.
