Police Release Video Of Officer-Involved Fatal Shooting

PHILADELPHIA -

"Often times we have armed opponents that we're coming up against, and that's the reality of what's going on out there on the streets," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey.

The department released video Friday of a police-involved shooting in which an officer shot a gunman to death. The video shows parts of the incident which happened 10 p.m. Wednesday on the 4500 block of Wayne Avenue in Germantown.

Watching the video, at the top right of the screen you see a man get out of a Nissan Altima and open fire with a .45-caliber semi-automatic on two people crossing the street.

During a news conference about the surveillance video Mayor Michael Nutter said, "When confronted with the level of fire power on the streets, I expect our officers to protect themselves first and protect members of the public as soon as they possibly can. They risk their lives each and every day."

Officials say a police officer working his beat happened to be parked behind the shooter and ordered him to put down the gun. But when the man did not, the officer fired his weapon, killing the gunman.

"I don't think he fired a round at the officer, although he sort of spun in that direction," said Ramsey.

People who live on the block where it happened are outraged.

"We are more scared of the police than we are the people walking down the street nowadays," said Lawrence Jackson.

John Smith said, "The officer could have disarmed the man. He could have shot in the lower body or something instead of taking him out like that."

Facing that type of danger though, Ramsey said officers will do what they are trained to do: "He had to respond and respond very quickly to save the lives of the people this guy was shooting at as well as his own life."

The night of the Wayne Avenue police-involved shooting, there were three police-involved shootings that day. There were seven police-involved shootings that week.
