MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -

Military families pay a price when their loved ones are serving overseas. Their time apart is tough, and when families are reunited, it's extra special. There was an emotional solider surprise in Madison Heights on Friday.

Five-year-old Jason and six-year-old Julian had gone a whole year without seeing their dad, so their family wanted to make the reunion extra special. Madison School District Superintendent Randy Speck bent over backwards to make it happen.

In the perfect setup for the surprise, Speck was reading to a group of unsuspecting kindergartners and first graders at Halfman Elementary when Army Staff Sergeant Samuel Jackson walked into the library.

"I knew it had to be today because my brother said he'll be back in three days, and I counted three days," Julian said.

"I missed my dad," Jason said, adding that he feels "good" now that his dad is home. Julian couldn't stop smiling.

Staff Sergeant Jackson spent nine months in Afghanistan and three months in training. He will be stationed in Michigan from this point forward.

The boys got a half day off from school so that they can enjoy a long weekend with their dad.
