NYC's new 911 system crashes twice

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York City's brand-new 911 system, located within a Downtown Brooklyn office space, crashed for 16 minutes during its first day of use on Wednesday. Then after officials thought the problem was fixed, the system went down again for 6 minutes on Thursday.

"The system went down yesterday, for 16 minutes, again yesterday was the first day of the new system fully in operation," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. "It's been tested now for almost six months, something went a miss yesterday."

Kelly said calls were coming in but takers couldn't relay the message to dispatchers so they had to scramble to make other plans.

When the 911 system went down, operators had to use much more simple technology:  they wrote out slips using basic paper and pencil and passed those slips to runners who gave them to dispatchers.

Kelly said no one's safety was at risk and that the department was working to fix the problem.

The opening day crash was the latest in a series of problems. The Daily News reported the $2 billion project to upgrade the 911 system has been delayed several times over the last seven years.

"Well I know the manufacturer has been in and they're working through the night," Kelly said. "They thought they had a fix at 3 a.m. this morning and then obviously this happened again so it has to be thoroughly examined."
