Livernois Avenue to be showcased during 2-day weekend event

Detroit's Avenue of Fashion could be the place to be this weekend. A community, it's businesses and local nonprofits are working together to drum up some major attention.

Pop ups are showing up in some of Detroit's coolest neighborhoods, and now there is one at 19410 Livernois. They're designed to draw attention from shoppers and draw potential businesses, but this one has another special purpose.

"This pop up is really about showcasing Livernois Avenue, it's culture, it's businesses, bringing people to the corridor and then sending them back out," said Virginia Stanard from the Detroit Collaborative Design Center.

Detroit's Avenue of Fashion is in the midst of a comeback. The business corridor is home to new stores, restaurants and it's surrounded by some of Detroit's strongest neighborhoods and two universities, and it's been awarded a number of grants that will help it develop, including a $200,000 Artspace grant.

"We'll have people from all over the country that are going to come in and do some artwork here, and some local artists will be doing artwork here," said Kim Tandy from University Commons.

This weekend, the pop up will help host Light Up Livernois, a weekend of family events, including a fashion show right out on the avenue.

"It also will bring a lot of people... that are not necessarily on Livernois to Livernois to see what is actually here on Livernois," Tandy said. "Our vision is to be a walkable commercial strip for people that are in the neighborhood to enjoy and then also as a destination spot for people to come in and see the artwork and see the wonderful things that are happening here and enjoy this."

Light Up Livernois begins Friday at 6:00 p.m. The following is a schedule of events:

SATURDAY, JUNE 1

10:00 AM -- Yoga with the Wellness Advocates of Detroit

11:00 AM to 1:00 PM -- University Commons Community Parade

1:00 to 3:00 PM -- Paint Your Own Pottery with We Are Clay and Art in Motion

3:00 PM -- DIY Fashion Workshop with Erin Marie McDonald

5:00 PM -- Theater Performance by Extra Mile Playwrights

    Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
