Evanston High forfeits baseball playoff over sexting allegations

EVANSTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An Evanston high school varsity baseball team will not play in the playoff tournament this weekend after a group of students, including team members, allegedly "sexted" risque photos to each other.

Earlier this week, Evanston Township High School officials received a report that some female students had sent "inappropriate" photos of themselves to members of the varsity baseball team, Supt. Eric Witherspoon wrote in a letter to parents.

In turn, the baseball players allegedly shared those photos with others, he wrote.

The baseball team has forfeited Friday night's home playoff game against Taft High, IHSA assistant executive director Craig Anderson confirmed Friday.

"It's too bad," Anderson said, adding the school's athletic director said the team did not have enough players to participate in the game for disciplinary reasons.

Evanston High is hosting the regional tournament. A game was played on the campus Thursday night and the championship game will be played there Saturday.

"Sexting …," according to Witherspoon, "can best be described as sending, sharing, viewing, receiving or possessing indecent visual depictions of oneself or another person over the Internet or via cell phones."

While he did not confirm or deny the allegations, he said an investigation was launched into a "sexting situation" and "appropriate actions" were taken.

Evanston police and the state Department of Children and Family Services have been notified, but will not be taking additional action, Witherspoon's letter states.

Evanston High's athletic director did not immediately return a call for comment.
